Stargate Hydrogen Retrospective – Q2 2026
We invite you to read the Q2 Stargate Hydrogen retrospective and see what our teams have achieved over the past three months. Throughout Q2, we continued to move key R&D and commercial projects forward, strengthened partnerships, welcomed visitors to our facilities, and took part in industry events that support the growth of green hydrogen.
As we begin the second half of the year, several major initiatives are reaching new milestones. The progress made during Q2 reflects the steady work across the company and brings Stargate Hydrogen closer to its next stage of growth.
Let's take a look at what happened during the quarter.
Research & Development

Innovation is an ongoing process, and every project brings new insights and progress. In this section, we share the latest updates from our R&D activities, highlighting key milestones, technical developments, and what we're working on next.

EXSOTHyC
EXSOTHyC is approaching several major milestones: the final stack design is complete; assembly is planned for September, and in-house testing will follow in the Star bench. Click to Learn more.

Sea4Volt
Thanks to the team's efforts, a key project deliverable will be met this June: the delivery of the Sea4Volt baseline stack, which will be tested at VTT in Finland. Click to learn more.

AELIOS
The project kick-off was a success, setting a strong foundation for collaboration. We are happy to work in this consortium and get our next-gen STR70 tested by Tecnalia in 2027. Click to learn more.
Events & Visits

Meeting customers, partners, and industry peers is an important part of what we do. Here's a look at the events we've recently attended, along with the conferences, exhibitions and visits.

Rainer Speaker at RedRock Energy
Our CTO, Rainer Küngas, was on stage at the EnergyArena organised by RedRock Energy Ab - In his words: There is momentum for wider adoption of renewables, and Power-2-X on Åland, and Stargate Hydrogen has the right electrolysis solutions needed to bring down the cost of green hydrogen.

Marko and Rainer visit Repsol's HQ
Green hydrogen will scale through industrial partnerships. That is why our CEO, Marko Virkebau, and CTO, Rainer Küngas, spent two days at Repsol’s HQ, discussing collaboration beyond financing.

Fortum Test Center Inauguration
We reached a milestone for Fortum and Stargate Hydrogen as the Kalla Test Center in Finland was inaugurated. Our CEO, Marko Virkebau, was proud to say: “Delivering this project together with Fortum shows that our technology and our team are ready to support the growing hydrogen economy in the Nordics and beyond.”

World Hydrogen Summit
This year, the World Hydrogen Summit was all about RELIABILITY. That’s why our partnership with ABB matters. Together, we’re offering solutions that industries can count on. More than efficiency, we offer a hands-on partnership that translates to system uptime.

Hydrogen Europe General Assembly
Stargate Hydrogen was well represented at the Hydrogen Europe General Assembly 2026 by Rafael Pauli, our VP of Sales and Board Member. The event organised by Hydrogen Europe made clear that progress in hydrogen does not happen in isolation. It happens when people share ideas, challenge assumptions, and turn ambition into real projects.

Hydrogen is not built in silos. It is built through ecosystems
AS Metrosert and Stargate Hydrogen hosted the first Hydrogen Projects Presentation Seminar in Tallinn, bringing together project managers, R&D leaders and clean energy experts working on hydrogen and clean energy projects in Estonia.
Latest Articles

At Stargate Hydrogen have the privilege of working with the absolute experts in the field; we consider it our duty to share their knowledge and information with a wider audience. In our Blog, you will find insights and educational articles about the process and importance of green hydrogen production, its role in the industry of tomorrow.

Electrolyser waste heat utilisation
How to stay warm without wasting resources? Part of the answer is already there, just not being used. Electrolysers don’t only generate hydrogen. They also release heat

Oxygen, from by-product to strategic asset
Most people think hydrogen is the whole story. But every electrolyser quietly produces something else too, oxygen, which in many projects is discarded. But that might be a missed opportunity.

Risk reduction with EPCs
Bankable projects depend on strong partnerships, clear responsibilities, and honest communication. In this article, Rafael Pauli, our VP of Sales, shares how OEMs and EPCs work together to reduce uncertainty.

The electrolyser price is driven by Iridium
Talks around CAPEX always consider technology choice, and that is fair, but material dependency matters too. Our VP of Engineering, Marc Gschwender, explains how precious metals influence scalability.

Future of ammonia is green
It has been concluded that 48% of the world’s population’s existence is made possible by the food produced using nitrogen fertilisers made using ammonia. Learn how green ammonia impacts different industries.
