Stargate Hydrogen Retrospective – Q1 2026

We invite you to read the Stargate Hydrogen retrospective, to look back at the past quarter and the progress made by our teams across different departments at Stargate Hydrogen.

During Q1, we took part in several industry events, welcomed visitors to our facilities, and continued to advance both R&D and commercial projects.

We enter the second quarter with strong momentum. The coming months will be important as several initiatives move forward, taking Stargate Hydrogen to the highest level of maturity so far. Without further ado, let's get started.

Stargate Hydrogen turns five years old!

Lets start the this Stargate Hydrogen Retrospective with a celebration! We are five years old now. Five years of planning, executing, building, learning, and growing. Young in years, yet more mature than ever. We started Stargate Hydrogen with a clear goal: to enable the industry of tomorrow with green hydrogen, and that has not changed. Today, we are proud of what we have built, the partnerships we have formed, and the progress we continue to make. Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. Here to many more years ahead!

The electrolyser at the Utilitas power plant has been in operation for a full year

The 1 MW Gateway system at the Utilitas power plant in Tallinn, Estonia, has now been operating for over one year. It is part of a full value chain pilot that supplies hydrogen to a fleet of 30 taxis operated by the mobility company Bolt, besides several trucks, buses and tube-trailers that operate in the capital city. The system is also connected to the poweplant allowing the use of waste heat from the electrolyser to support the district heating network.

Electrolyser at Fortum continues during its first winter

Spring has arrived, and our electrolyser at the Fortum site stands strong. The commissioning activities never stopped during the winter's long nights. Now, as the season shifts, our teams continue there, pushing forward. Progress like this demands teamwork and consistency.

In the photo, you see the engineers Tarmo Ronk, Mihhail Kuznetsov and Martin Plaado, who, after working during the Finnish long winter, now have much better weather ahead.

EXSOTHyC final year

The EXSOTHyC project has entered its final year, and the focus is clear: take what worked in the lab and prove it at scale. For the past two years, partners across Europe have been working on optimising electrolysers towards lower voltages and higher efficiency. From exsolution-based nanoparticles to new diaphragm concepts, the work has been deep, technical, and hands-on. Read the article about this inspiring project and join us in enabling the industry of tomorrow with affordable green hydrogen.

At Stargate Hydrogen, we’re proud to coordinate this effort and help to bring these ideas closer to practical green hydrogen production, together with our partners. Thank you, Fraunhofer IFAM Dresden, Eindhoven University of Technology, Agfa, and the University of St Andrews.

Stargate Hydrogen signs the first partnership in the UK with Seacht Group

We’re excited to share in this Stargate Hydrogen Retrospective that Stargate Hydrogen has signed its first UK partnership with the UK-based Seacht Group, marking our entry into the UK hydrogen market. This collaboration brings together our electrolysis technology and Seacht’s deep energy and engineering expertise to pursue green hydrogen projects across the UK.

Marko meets the Director-General of the European Commission’s DG CLIMA

Stargate's Hydrogen CEO Marko Virkebau met with Kurt Vandenberghe, Director-General of the European Commission’s DG CLIMA. Topics discussed included proprietary greentech innovations coming from Estonia, the ongoing debate about ETS and upcoming changes in climate-related legislation. Such meetings create space for open conversations between policymakers and the companies building green technologies for the future of European industry.

As Marko said: “Engaging in dialogue with both the European Commission and the Estonian government helps ensure that Stargate Hydrogen stays on the right track as we develop products that support European industries in their path to resilience and decarbonisation.”

Thank you to the European Commission representatives in Estonia for organising the meeting.
